Sleeping Out for Change

Southern Cross Group CEO Sam Johnson has once again taken part in the annual Vinnies ‘CEO Sleepout’ to help raise money and awareness for the plight of the thousands of homeless people struggling during these dark winter nights. More than just a networking event, this endeavour hopes to engender real empathy from those for whom homelessness is often so far from mind. Beginning as a local community venture in Parramatta in 2006, the Sleepout has now grown to become an annual event that raises upwards of $5,000,000 for charities dealing with this ever worsening issue.

Sharing his experience of the event Sam Johnson stated that he had the chance to meet Rabbi Dovid Slavin (founder and director of Our Big Kitchen in Bondi, Chaplain to the NSW Ambulance service, co-founder of Gift of Life Australia, and director of The Rabbinical College of Sydney & Yeshiva College) as well as Monika Tu – Director of ‘Black Diamondz Property Concierge’.

CEO Sleepout 2017

Each year, the St Vincent de Paul Society’s CEO Sleepout raises millions of dollars to help some of Australia’s most vulnerable people.

Sam Johnson CEO Southern Cross Group, committed to the cause of homeless and abandoned children and youth, voluntarily participated in CEO sleepout -2016, and raised funds for emergency assistance. The generous act of Sam Johnson CEO, stemmed out of social conscience, attracted hundreds of people to come forward and share their mite and paved pathways to a bright future of thousands of homeless kids. This year too, Southern Cross Group has decided to participate in the CEO sleepout-2017 to raise awareness on the minuscule yet significant section of the abandoned children and raise funds for the same.

Mr Sam Johnson, Southern Cross Group’s CEO, will be participating in the CEO Sleepout for the second time, experiencing the realities of homelessness in an effort to express solidarity with less privileged children and raise funds for their holistic development.

Build For A Cure – The Story so Far

Southern Cross Group are delighted to be supporting partners for the Children’s Cancer Institute initiative ‘Build for a Cure’. Members of the SCG team enjoyed helping out at the official ‘Reveal Day’ for a brand new fully furnished four-bedroom home, built from the ground up at Billy’s Lookout in Lake Macquarie to raise funds and awareness for International Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. This initiative aims to help fund medical research and ultimately save lives of children with cancer and offer support to their families.

Even a drizzly sky couldn’t dampen people’s spirits and SCG ensured there was plenty to keep people entertained on the day, providing a free Barbecue lunch and a Pass the Ball competition manned by none other than Parramatta and State of Origin star Brett Kenny. Some of the children who took part in the competition displayed great potential. Perhaps we witnessed the birth of some future NRL stars in the making!

We’re ready for a great turnout and a fantastic result at Auction Day later this month on October 23rd.

Wall to Wall Ride 2016

On September 17th Southern Cross Group sponsored the Wall to Wall: Ride for Remembrance, an annual motorcycle ride to honour Police Officers who have fallen in the line of duty. The event, which has grown significantly larger since it’s humble beginnings in 2010, saw over 2000 riders and pillions make the trip from Sydney to the National Police Memorial in Canberra where a ceremony was held to conclude the event. With a number of keen motorcyclists in our Senior Management Team and strong relationship with the NSW Police Force, Southern Cross Group was proud to have the opportunity to act as a Platinum Sponsor for the Wall to Wall ride. To support those who took part in the ride, we offered massages in Canberra to those who completed the trip and were looking for a brief refreshment before the ceremony.

CCIA-Tour
A Tour of the Children’s Cancer Institute Australia

As part of Southern Cross’ partnership with the Children’s Cancer Institute of Australia’s “Build for a Cure” program, some of our head office staff were invited on a tour of the cutting edge facility determined to end childhood cancer. As a touching and poignant reminder of our purpose in partnering with CCIA, as well as the purpose of the Build for a Cure program, we visited the brave kids fighting Australia’s most fatal childhood disease. Our staff were also taken through a range of research areas and state-of-the-art laboratories, where CCIA’s dedicated scientists and researchers hope to finally find a cure and end the suffering of children with cancer. CCIA focus their research efforts on neuroblastoma, one of the most aggressive forms of cancer in children.

The attending group included (from left to right): Anthony Pearce (National Training and Development Manager), Kim Luck (RTO Coordinator), Ian Saggus (Business Development / Project Manager) and Jordan Latham (Business Development Assistant).

To find out more about CCIA and the incredible work they do, visit ccia.org.au.
