Holiday Safety with Ken Barlow

Holiday Tips to Stay Safe and Reduce Hazard

As the festive season approaches our thoughts are often diverted from the mundane tasks of work and injuries are far from our mind, however Christmas has its own unique injury statistics. The four (4) most common being:

Burns: Burns happen too often during the festive season, from kitchen accidents through to candles and accidental fires from BBQ’s, spits and open fires. To prevent burns when cooking use kitchen mitts, never leave cooking food unattended, and that also goes for candles. Make sure you don’t overload power points particularly around natural timber Christmas trees.

Falls: Falls are very common at Christmas due to our desire to have the biggest and best decorated trees and our houses covered with fairy lights. Statistically Emergency Departments treat over 17,000 falls nationally over a 10-day period. To prevent falls use ladders correctly, use spotters when working at heights, and decorate trees and houses when sober.

Asphyxiation:  With the amount of food being ingested and the small trinkets that kids get their hands on, it’s no wonder that asphyxiation is one of the biggest injuries during the holidays. Asphyxiation is a serious concern for families with small children and caution should be taken to make sure all your holiday decorations are baby-proofed. As tempting as it is to wolf down those holiday meals, make sure you take your time to chew and swallow properly so you don’t choke on your food.

Car Accidents: Traditionally the Christmas/New Year period demonstrates the highest levels of accidents and fatalities with the Police forces throughout the country focussing on the road safety campaign. While we may well have heeded the message of drink-driving, fatigue is also a catalyst for serious injuries and fatalities. To overcome these issues, use the 2/10 principal (for every 2 hours of driving take 10 minutes break away from the car). Remember to drink ample hydrating fluids and share the driving tasks with another person.

Remember these tips and take care over the holiday period to avoid becoming a statistic

Build For A Cure – The Story so Far

southern cross group support for Children’s Cancer Institute

Southern Cross Group are delighted to be supporting partners for the Children’s Cancer Institute initiative ‘Build for a Cure’. Members of the SCG team enjoyed helping out at the official ‘Reveal Day’ for a brand new fully furnished four-bedroom home, built from the ground up at Billy’s Lookout in Lake Macquarie to raise funds and awareness for International Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. This initiative aims to help fund medical research and ultimately save lives of children with cancer and offer support to their families.

Even a drizzly sky couldn’t dampen people’s spirits and SCG ensured there was plenty to keep people entertained on the day, providing a free Barbecue lunch and a Pass the Ball competition manned by none other than Parramatta and State of Origin star Brett Kenny. Some of the children who took part in the competition displayed great potential. Perhaps we witnessed the birth of some future NRL stars in the making!

We’re ready for a great turnout and a fantastic result at Auction Day later this month on October 23rd.

Wall to Wall Ride 2016

On September 17th Southern Cross Group sponsored the Wall to Wall: Ride for Remembrance, an annual motorcycle ride to honour Police Officers who have fallen in the line of duty. The event, which has grown significantly larger since it’s humble beginnings in 2010, saw over 2000 riders and pillions make the trip from Sydney to the National Police Memorial in Canberra where a ceremony was held to conclude the event. With a number of keen motorcyclists in our Senior Management Team and strong relationship with the NSW Police Force, Southern Cross Group was proud to have the opportunity to act as a Platinum Sponsor for the Wall to Wall ride. To support those who took part in the ride, we offered massages in Canberra to those who completed the trip and were looking for a brief refreshment before the ceremony.

A Tour of the Children’s Cancer Institute Australia

Build for a Cure - SCGS

As part of Southern Cross’ partnership with the Children’s Cancer Institute of Australia’s “Build for a Cure” program, some of our head office staff were invited on a tour of the cutting edge facility determined to end childhood cancer. As a touching and poignant reminder of our purpose in partnering with CCIA, as well as the purpose of the Build for a Cure program, we visited the brave kids fighting Australia’s most fatal childhood disease. Our staff were also taken through a range of research areas and state-of-the-art laboratories, where CCIA’s dedicated scientists and researchers hope to finally find a cure and end the suffering of children with cancer. CCIA focus their research efforts on neuroblastoma, one of the most aggressive forms of cancer in children.

The attending group included (from left to right): Anthony Pearce (National Training and Development Manager), Kim Luck (RTO Coordinator), Ian Saggus (Business Development / Project Manager) and Jordan Latham (Business Development Assistant).

To find out more about CCIA and the incredible work they do, visit ccia.org.au.
